Charles Sturt was the first European to visit the area on which Wagga Wagga now stands. His expedition followed the Murrumbidgee river in 1832. The name itself came from the local aboriginal language and means “Place where the crows congregated”. In 1847 a courthouse was established at Wagga Wagga to deal with the problems that were growing in the region and the city started to grow from these beginnings. The region had a colourful start with bushrangers like Captain Moonlight, Mad Dog Morgan and Ned Kelly’s younger brother James all making their mark in the region and finding justice in the Wagga Wagga courthouse.
